BC Energy Step Code Tips & Tools

The world of energy modelling is a complicated one. Not only are there multiple codes, standards, performance requirements and tools, but the codes and standards themselves are constantly changing with different versions and revisions introducing new requirements and updates.

We’re always looking for tips and tools to share that help demystify some of the complexities around energy modelling. Here are two recent developments that might simplify life a little for anyone working with the BC Energy Step Code Part 3 requirements.

  1. Part 3 Energy Step Code Compliance Report

    Where: energystepcode.ca/compliance-tools-part3

What: Excel spreadsheet (Beta version) to summarize and verity Part 3 Step Code results for compliance purposes

Why: It’s a straightforward (1.5 page) way of providing energy modelling results that should lead to more consistent reporting across different modellers, projects and jurisdictions

Free webinar: Learn more by attending a free webinar on July 30th where we will provide a background on the report and how to use it. Register here.

  2. Part 3 Energy Step Code TEDI/TEUI Limits Calculator

    Where: https://www.focaleng.com/stepcodelimitscalc

(Note: may require Microsoft login… we’re working on this!)

What: Online tool to calculate Part 3 TEDI and TEUI targets based on a building type and location (HDD)

Why: Because sometimes it’s easier to use a dropdown menu than deciphering code!

Disclaimer: The tool uses the climate data available in version 2.1 of the Part 3 Compliance report. Some AHJs will supersede this with their own requirements. All values should be confirmed by the design team with the AHJ.
