Creating an Energy-Efficient Hub for
Student Collaboration and Innovation
UBC Students Arts Centre
The UBC Arts Student Centre (ASC) is a dynamic, multi-purpose building that embodies the mission of the Arts Undergraduate Society to enrich the academic, social, and personal lives of students in the Faculty of Arts. Located on the UBC Vancouver campus, the ASC offers a central hub for collaboration, learning, and innovation. Designed as a “common ground” for Arts students, the building integrates flexible spaces for activities such as media production, video conferencing, art display, and special events.
Results
Focal Engineering provided comprehensive energy modelling for the UBC Arts Student Centre, a 3-storey multipurpose facility designed to support collaboration and innovation for UBC’s Faculty of Arts.
Using IES-VE, Focal conducted whole building energy modelling to optimise energy performance and support the project’s LEED v4 certification goals. Key contributions included modelling the high-performance building envelope, featuring R19 batt and 4” exterior insulation with a double-glazed curtain wall system, and analysing mechanical systems to achieve energy efficiency targets.
Focal’s work ensured the building met rigorous sustainability standards while fostering a functional and vibrant space for students.
