BC Step Code Map

Many jurisdictions in British Columbia have adopted Energy and Zero Carbon Step Code requirements that exceed the provincial minimums. This interactive map highlights select locations and their adoption timelines.

● Where requirements are not specified the Provincial minimum requirements are assumed.

● Some municipalities have additional rules for specific building types or offer multiple compliance pathways, such as adjusted Energy Step Code requirements when enhanced Zero Carbon performance is achieved (note with asterisk).

● Where Step requirements for a building type does not exist under current Code cells are indicated in grey.

Legend

  • ESC / ZCSC: Energy Step Code / Zero Carbon Step Code
  • P3 / P9: Part 3 / Part 9
  • Commercial: Group D and Mercantile, Business, and Office occupancies (per BCBC)
  • Residential: Group C, excluding hotels and motels (per BCBC). Note: Some jurisdictions have different low/high-rise residential or combustible/non-combustible requirements.
