Advancing Energy Efficiency at Watson Lake's Community Hub

Project

Energy Analysis: Watson Lake Recreation Centre

The Watson Lake Recreation Centre serves the community of Watson Lake, Yukon and beyond, through a host of activity spaces. The facility houses a hockey rink, curling rink and important community spaces.

Focal recently completed a comprehensive energy analysis to support the Town of Watson Lake and Yukon Government to assess upgrades for energy and emissions reductions. This analysis was used to support a federal Green and Inclusive Community Building (GICB) funding application and future retrofit considerations.

Our role was to assess the existing conditions based on condition reports from various consultants, prepare and calibrate an energy model for the facility in RETScreen, assess the energy and GHG impact of planned upgrades, and propose further upgrades for the project.

Results

With heating loads accounting for a significant portion of the facility’s annual energy use, the analysis focused on improving the building envelope to enhance thermal performance, reduce energy consumption, and improve occupant comfort. Key envelope measures evaluated and recommended included upgrading insulation levels in walls and roofs and sealing air leakage points throughout the building envelope. Additional measures considered for future upgrades included heat recovery and VFD pump controls. If the most advantageous bundle of measures studied were pursued, it is estimated that nearly 50% annual energy use could be reduced.
