Modelling Performance for a LEED Platinum, All-Electric Research Facility at the University of Pennsylvania

Project

Vagelos Laboratory for Energy Science and Technology

The Vagelos Laboratory for Energy Science & Technology (VLEST) at the University of Pennsylvania is a landmark academic research facility focused on sustainability, energy conversion, and materials innovation. Completed in December 2024 with its official opening on December 12, 2024, the 113,000-square-foot building embodies Penn’s climate action goals and achieved LEED Platinum certification.
Focal Engineering provided detailed energy modelling using IES VE, supporting LEED energy compliance and validating thermal performance strategies established by Transsolar Energietechnik, who served as climate engineer on the project.
Technical Highlights
– Passive façade strategy featuring ETFE “solar sail” shading system
– Geothermal heat pump and advanced energy recovery systems
– Fully electrified heating and cooling with minimized ventilation energy
– Predictive energy modelling targeting an EUI of 137 kBtu/sf
– LEED Platinum certification and alignment with Penn’s carbon neutrality plan
– Maximum energy performance points under LEED
The Impact
The VLEST project sets a new standard for high-performance university research buildings, combining innovative passive strategies, electrified systems, and rigorous modelling to support Penn’s carbon neutrality by 2042.
