Where Sustainability Meets Cultural
and Botanical Innovation
The Leaf at Assiniboine Park
Canada’s Diversity Gardens at Assiniboine Park, featuring The Leaf, celebrates the interconnection of people, plants, and culture through innovative design.
As the park’s centerpiece, this landmark project offers dynamic biomes, including sub-tropical, Mediterranean, and tropical butterfly environments, alongside offices, conference spaces, and a restaurant, creating a sustainable space for exploring nature’s diversity.
Results
Focal Engineering served as the energy modelling consultant to help meet rigorous energy efficiency goals while aligning with the architect’s vision for a high-performance structure. Leveraging IESVE software, we modelled natural ventilation strategies with MacroFlo, designed custom HVAC systems with ApacheHVAC, and integrated plant-driven moisture simulations using ERGON. Our work included advanced solutions like radiant floor heating, earth tubes, and groundwater source heat pumps, supporting the pursuit of LEED Silver certification.
Focal helped the design team achieve sustainable design excellence, enhancing this dynamic space for visitors to connect with nature.
