For the May 2023 update to the BCBC Step Code, Focal Engineering (project lead) and Bernhardt Contracting were engaged to update the Part 3 & 9 Step Code reporting tools and their associated User Guides. The updates aligned the tools with the code changes, as well as incorporate improvements based on feedback from industry stakeholders including the energy modelling community, building designers, and local governments.
Results
As part of the update process, Focal and Bernhardt worked with the BSSB to select members of Advisory Groups (AG) for each Part 3 and 9, to provide feedback at certain phases of the project. The tools were released in the summer of 2023 and have been used by industry since then.
The Focal/Bernhardt team were then retained to provide training on how to use the tools, focusing on the updates provided in 2023. For both Part 3 and Part 9, online webinars were held, aimed towards different groups: Checklist Users and AHJs. Over 400 people signed up for these sessions.
The team later recorded online versions of the presentations that live on www.energystepcode.ca. The presentations and webinars included case studies, self-tests and wayfinding to make the information engaging and useful.
